Malaga as a typical port city reminded me what Marseilles stands for French Riviera and Naples for Italian Riviera. It is super convenient because of the airport’s proximity to the city centre but at the same time is not one of the top destinations to visit if you are looking the ultimate summer experience.

However, it was quite surprising to see how vibrant and colourful is its city-centre with interesting culture and amazing art exhibitions along with the amazing sweets and the baroque cathedral. In case you have a couple of days to spend, I cant recommend enough to visit the following  top attractions.

Museo Picasso Malaga

  • On our first day we decided to visit the Museo Picasso only because we are both arts history lovers. The exhibition is devoted to Picasso’s progress from the late-19th century until his death in 1973.
  • Before visiting the museum we enjoyed our coffee in the courtyard cafe at the heart of the old city. We also had the chance to see the Andy’s Walrhol collection and we did an audio tour through a selections of his fantastic work.

Alcazaba, Gibralfaro and Cathedral

  • This leafy hill topped by a castle strategically situated overlooking the sea is a must-see spot in Malaga. From the top of Gibralfaro you can enjoy the beautiful view to the port and also you can see how massive the old city centre looks like from up there. Better to go early in the morning or very late in the evening because you might get sunburned.
  • The cathedral was the first church I’ve seen in my life with gothic, renaissance, and baroque architectural influence together. I enjoyed the colourful vitro windows and the wall sculptures by Pedro de Mena. I also loved the fact that is playing classic music and there is so much painting to see (especially the ones from Alonso Cano).
